About Samaritans of Derby
Derby Samaritans is 60 years old! We took our first call on Friday 27 January 1961 and we’ve been providing emotional support for people who are struggling to cope ever since.
Find out more about our long local history and follow us on Twitter @DerbySamaritans.
We’re based at 110 Burton Road in Derby, and our 90+ volunteers support callers on the phone, by email, and in person – every single day of the year.
We also engage with our local communities in Derby and across Derbyshire by providing prisoner support, through our partnership with Network Rail and at Derby station, by giving talks to schools and colleges, local businesses, groups and clubs, and at lots of community events. Find out more about our outreach activities.
Every year our volunteers:
- give about 17,000 hours of their time to run our charity – equivalent to nine full-time staff!
- respond to around 15,000 calls for help
- reach over 6,000 people in the community
Volunteer with us
Everyone in our branch is a volunteer. We’re ordinary people from all walks of life, young and old, working full-time and retired, and everything in between. As well as listening volunteers, there are administrative, fundraising and publicity roles and we’re always happy to welcome more help.
If you’re interested in volunteering with us you can find out more about the different roles, what the listening volunteer training involves, the benefits of volunteering, and how to apply on our volunteering page.
Support us
It costs around £40,000 a year to run our branch, and we rely entirely on donations from the public, businesses and other organisations. There are lots of ways to donate or fundraise, and any amount will help us to answer more calls for support.
