Samaritans of Macclesfield & District has been offering emotional support to people in the local community since 1963.
Today we have a team of over 90 volunteers who take around 16,500 phone calls and respond to thousands of emails & online chats a year, and as well as offering a listening service to anyone having a difficult time or struggling to cope, we are actively involved in the wider community.
Through our outreach work we:
- have established relationships with a number of schools in the local community to support emotional health education. Through assembly talks and classroom workshops we reach over 2,250 young people in schools each year.
- support the Listener Scheme - a peer support system - in HMP Styal. Listeners save lives and reduce self-harm in prisons.
- work with Macclesfield railway station. We regularly hold awareness events (such as Brew Monday) at the station and via our partnership with Network Rail we work together with railway staff to reduce suicide on the railways.
We also support local events such as the Macclesfield Half Marathon and Macclesfield Pride.
