About Mid Cheshire (Northwich) Samaritans

Our branch has been providing support to people in our local area since 1964.

We offer emotional support in person, by telephone, by email and by text and on average each year we help over 22,000 people going through a tough time. Our branch covers the following areas:

RHS Flower Show Tatton Park 2024

1. Hordeum jubatum (foxtail barley) - a densely-tufted annual or perennial grass, to 60cm tall. It has nodding panicles of silky, long-bristled green spikelets, often with a hint of red at the tips, in early to mid-summer.
2. Stipa tenuissima (wind whispers) - beautifully feathery grass, creating soft drifts which look good through Autumn and Winter. Up to 80cm. Light soil. Hardy.
3. Deschampsia cespitosa (pixie fountain) - tufted hair grass. Clump forming evergreen ornamental grass with spikes of silver grey flowers during Summer. Grow in moist or well drained soil in full sun or part shade. 60cm.
4. Leucanthemum (crazy daisy) - a clump forming herbaceous perennial with dark green, toothed, lanced shaped leaves. Fringed, double white flowers with yellow centres, flowering for a long period in the Summer if dead-headed regularly.
5. Leucathemum x superbum (Becky) - tall growing shasta daisy, bearing single daisies with white petals and a yellow centre. Being single, the flowers are attractive to pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Flowers from Summer to mid Autumn.
6. Leucathemum (real comet) - large decorative blooms with fancy fringed central petals. Real comet has reflexing echinacea flower form, opening flat and relaxing over a 7-10 day period. This variety is very floriferous with improved disease resistance. It prefers well drained soil in a sunny border. Deadhead to encourage continuous bloom.
7. Leucathemum Madonna - mounded habit and a compact frame, Leucathemum Madonna is ideal for containers. Flowers from late Spring to Summer, pure white and yellow colour, heat and drought tolerant. Height 20-30cm; spread 20-30cm.
8. Geranium sanguine (album) - a spreading herbaceous perennial, open in habit, with small, dark green leaves divided into narrow lobes and often colouring well in Autumn. Pure white flowers 4cm in width in Summer.
9. Carex oshimensis (evergreen) - dense, tufted, evergreen perennial sedge, about 30cm tall with cascading mounds of dark green leaves. Carries brown flower spikes on stems to 15cm long, within the foliage, in mid and late Spring.
10. Lagurus ovartus (bunnies tails) - forms a tuft of narrow, arching leaves, with slender stems bearing dense ovoid flower heads. At first pale green and later pale buff to cream.
11. Erigeron karvinskianus (Mexican fleabane) - a semi-evergreen perennial forming wide mats to about 15-30cm in height, with wiry branching stems bearing narrow, hairy grey-green leaves. Yellow-centred daisy type flower heads 15mm in width, open white but soon turn pinkish-purple during the Summer.
12. Carex comans (frosted curls) - an evergreen perennial creating a mop-head of very slender, shimmering, silvery-green leaves. The flowers are insignificant.
13. Melica altissima alba - deciduous grass with green, scrappy leaves and delicate sprays of white flowers. Hardy. Up to 90cm.
14. Deschampsia cespitosa (amilime)
15. Deschampsia cespitosa (goldtau) - a compact, evergreen, mound forming grass with narrow, arching mid-green foliage which changes to golden brown as it matures. Long lasting silvery brown and green flower plumes to around 75cm in height and turn to a warm golden colour as they mature.
16. Stipa calamagrostis (rough feather grass) - a tufted deciduous perennial with narrow, arching leaves and feathery panicles of pale green spikelets in Summer that turn light buff and persist into Winter.
17. Carex comans (phoenix green) - densely tufted, clump-forming, evergreen perennial sedge, about 30-45cm tall, with hair like, upright then arching, bright green leaves. Carries inconspicuous brown flower spikes to 25cm long, within the foliage, in mid and late Summer.

Our Work in Mid Cheshire

A really important part of Samaritans work is to reach out to people in the community and work with other organisations to raise awareness of what we do and offer support to as many people as we can. Every 90 minutes, someone in the UK or Ireland takes their own life and every 10 seconds, Samaritans responds to a call for help.

We have an outreach team who work with, for example, local schools. We love giving talks to anyone who invites us, so we can spread the word.

Volunteering in our Branch

Everyone in the Branch is a volunteer, from Annie our Director to our part time fundraisers. We have around 65 volunteers. Although Samaritans is best known for its listening volunteers who answer the telephones, there are so many other ways in which you can help us. We have roles in administration, fundraising, IT support and building maintenance for example. Raising Funds for our branch can be fun!

There are so many ways you can raise money for us! Our branch is autonomous and responsible for its own fundraising and management of its volunteers. The central charity just helps us out with policy.

Each year our branch receives over 22,000 calls for support. We need your support to help us to make sure we can be there for anyone who needs us.

There are many ways in which you can help us; no contribution is too small to make a big difference.
