Samaritans’ 2017-18 charity of the year partnership with retailer Scotmid Cooperative raised an incredible £315,000.
Employees and customers from Scotmid, Semichem, Lakes & Dales Coop and Scotmid Funerals took part in lots of different activities during their year-long fundraising drive. They did everything from Kiltwalks and zip slides to sponsored hair dyes and silences. Some staff were even brave enough to take a New Year dip in the North Sea, beating our target of £300,000 and helping us fund 63,000 calls for support.
We’re incredibly proud of what we have achieved with Samaritans. The partnership exceeded all of our expectations. In just a year, Scotmid staff, members and customers raised enough money to fund over 63,000 calls for help, which have the potential to change, or even save someone’s life.

Scotmid stores also sold a range of products for Samaritans, including our reusable carrier bags, Brew Monday-branded Graham's cupcakes and a series of children's books.
The partnership gave us plenty of non-financial benefits, too, including an increased number of volunteer enquiries from stores and offices. We worked with the Scotmid Funerals team to produce a 'support after bereavement' guide that signposts to our services. We also trained Scotmid staff in how to be more emotionally resilient and look after their wellbeing.
