Samaritans and the rail company Abellio’s partnership launched in December 2017.
Through its Delay Repay scheme, Abellio, which runs West Midlands Trains, Greater Anglia and Merseyrail services are giving any passengers (delayed by 15 minutes or more) the opportunity to donate their compensation refund to Samaritans instead of accepting the payment themselves. The partnership helps ensure that we can continue to recruit, train and support volunteers and keep its free, lifesaving service going 24 hours a day.
The work of the Samaritans saving lives across the railway industry cannot be underestimated. Many of our customers said they didn’t want to claim compensation they are entitled to for a delay as a result of a fatality. In response we have changed our systems so that passengers can ask us to make a contribution to Samaritans instead. These small acts can make a huge difference to people’s lives.
George Robinson, Head of Policy and Communications at Abellio
We are thrilled to be working with Abellio and will continue to work together to ensure that Samaritans can be there for the millions of vulnerable people who need support.
