Samaritans response to Ofcom's Illegal Harms Codes coming into force

Responding to Ofcom’s Illegal Harms Codes which come into force today (Monday 17th March), Jacqui Morrissey, Assistant Director of Influencing at Samaritans, said:

“Today is a positive step towards making the internet a safer place as it means Ofcom can put the pedal to the metal and tackle platforms that aren’t removing illegal suicide and self-harm content, which we know can put lives at risk.

“In recent months, we’ve seen platforms announce changes that worryingly seem to roll back some of their progress on online safety, so it’s never been more important for Ofcom to show their teeth and demonstrate how strongly and swiftly they will enforce their new powers.”
