Samaritans response to latest ONS quarterly suicide death registrations in England, provisional data
Responding to ONS data released today, quarterly suicide death registrations in England: 2001 to 2022 registrations and Quarter 1 (Jan to Mar) to Quarter 4 (Oct to Dec) 2023 provisional data, Jacqui Morrissey, Assistant Director of Influencing at Samaritans, said: “The Government has skimped on saving lives, allowing vital local suicide prevention funding to simply run out on Sunday and now, less than a week later, these depressing figures show what a travesty that decision is. Early indications that suicide rates may be at their highest since 1999 must act as a wake-up call to ministers because investing just £1.40 per person in England could genuinely save lives - the cost of doing nothing is a far greater price to pay.”
