Samaritans response to the Autumn Statement 2023
Jacqui Morrissey, Assistant Director of Policy, Practise and Influencing at Samaritans, said:
“Today’s Autumn Statement was a vital chance for the Government to renew local suicide prevention funding before it runs out in less than six months. While the extra money for veterans’ mental health is good news and one that we welcome, we are deeply disappointed that the Government has failed to provide the funding to support its new suicide prevention strategy.
“Samaritans was asking the Government to set aside the equivalent of £1.40 per person in England, about the price of a loaf of bread – small change for the Government but it would have made a big change to suicide prevention. Now it is hard to know what the future holds.”
