A new scheme from Samaritans Scotland volunteers in Edinburgh is proving to be a highlight in the diaries of city salons.
Volunteers at the charity’s branch in the capital have been visiting salons with their ‘Healthy Hairdressers’ workshop, which aims to equip participants with active learning techniques and the confidence to offer appropriate support to those who may need it.
The project has recently been given a boost with a £2000 grant from Nationwide Building Society which will help roll it out across more salons and barbers across Edinburgh and the Lothians.
Matt Hosgood, Deputy Director for Outreach at the branch, explained: “We know that some people find accessing support directly from services intimidating or overwhelming, but find it much easier to open up to someone they see regularly and trust, such as their hair stylist.
“Many will sit down in the salon and just start talking to their hairdresser about any challenges they are facing in their life, and that can include their mental health.
“It’s wonderful they will feel comfortable enough to do this, but some stylists may lack the confidence or skills to successfully navigate these conversations, or provide appropriate support – and that’s why we developed the Healthy Hairdressers project.”
The project offers a one-hour Learn to Listen talk, which gives participants a better understanding of Samaritans services and shares the charity’s SHUSH listening tips.
Matt continued: “We hope that in using these skills – such as showing empathy, having patience and using open questions – stylists will feel empowered to ask about suicide and know how to effectively navigate these conversations.
“And ultimately, we hope that it helps people talk openly about their mental health in a space that is free of judgement, and have confidence to take the first step towards seeking help and support.
“We are delighted to have the support of Nationwide Building Society – the grant will allow volunteers to reach even more hairdressers and barbers across the city with the training.”
Stylists at The Players Lounge, on Rose Street, and at Emma Hall Hair, on Leith Walk, were amongst the first to have taken the Healthy Hairdresser training.
