"If I hadn’t called for help the first time 14 years ago, I believe I would be dead now."
“I’ve rang Samaritans a lot when I’ve had no one else to turn to. I reckon that’s what’s kept me going,” Rita says. Mum-of-one and a healthcare professional, Rita has always been open about her mental health struggles. She hopes that talking about her experience will reduce stigma and encourage other people to reach out when they’re struggling.
"Talking is amazing for mental health. My family and friends do their best, but they have their own lives going on. I could ring up a friend and say, ‘This is going on with me,’ but they might not know how to support me. So, I’ve often rang Samaritans when I’ve been struggling to cope."
We put our son to bed at half eight, so he’s usually asleep by nine. With my partner and son at home, I just throw on my jacket and go for a walk, and, if I’m having a tough day, I ring Samaritans.

“When I call Samaritans, they introduce themselves when they answer. Then they ask, ‘How are you doing today?’ I tell them how I’m feeling and why I’m feeling that way, what’s happening in my life. They don’t tell you what to do, but they help you consider your options and different perspectives. They might say to me, ‘What’s causing you the most stress right now and how can you deal with it?’ They never rush you off the phone and they’re very empathetic. I can talk to them about things I feel ashamed of and they’re never judgmental.
“I’ve been ringing Samaritans regularly as my life has progressed, just about different things going on in my life. If I hadn’t called for help the first time 14 years ago, I believe I would be dead now.
“To someone who’s never phoned Samaritans before, I’d say give it a chance. You’re talking to someone who’s trained. They’ll be a listening ear when you might not have anyone else. It’s normal to feel nervous. Just take it slow."
I feel lucky that in Ireland we have an organisation like Samaritans. It’s important to get the word out about Samaritans to really help people.
