New Mum Ashling from Cork is running a marathon for Samaritans.
"I'm Ashling, I in live Co. Cork with my husband Kieran, and my 6-month-old boy, Jack. When the opportunity to run the 2024 London Marathon for Samaritans came up, I felt it was a great opportunity to do something good for a great cause!
"I have a close family member who volunteers for Samaritans in Cork. I really admire him and his dedication. He is such a caring person, so it's amazing to know that real empathetic people are at the end of the line 24/7 if you call Samaritans. I want to volunteer myself but, with my work and family commitments, I couldn't commit to volunteering regularly. Definitely something I'd love to do in the future!
"In the past, I've had panic attacks and periods of high anxiety where I have felt really overwhelmed. I know speaking to someone makes me feel 100 times better instantly. So, the fact that Samaritans is there 24/7 to answer calls is incredible. Knowing a Samaritan personally makes me appreciate the charity more, as I know the volunteers are genuine, caring people who are there to listen.
"My fundraising for the London Marathon is going way better than I imagined! Family and friends have been so generous with donations as they all understand what a great cause it is. My family has also been really supportive in helping me train. They are so great to babysit Jack so I can go out and do a training run! I really couldn't do the marathon without them!
I would encourage anyone to run a marathon for Samaritans! You feel incredible after an achievement like a marathon – even more so when it's for a great cause. And once you start fundraising, you're accountable, which will motivate you to train!
