York Samaritans are once again taking part in the Yorkshire Marathon Relay on Sunday 20th October to further raise awareness about the work of the Samaritans.
York welcomes the Yorkshire Marathon each year and it’s the perfect opportunity to celebrate our work on our doorstep. Two teams of six runners will complete the 26.2 mile course as a relay with the different legs varying from 5km to 10km. The team names are apt - ‘Team We Listen’ and ‘Team 116 123’!
Last year ’Team We Listen’ achieved 3rd place in the mixed team 10K race.
The primary aim is to increase awareness of York Samaritans and to spread the word that we are there to listen 24/7 - whether it’s by telephone, email, letter or online chat. We’re there for people whenever they are facing challenging times. You don’t have to be suicidal to reach out to us. Last year, volunteers from York Samaritans spent over 5000 hours supporting the public through the 24-hour freephone helpline, 116123, our email [email protected] and our online chat service.
It is an incredible day out and a great opportunity for Samaritans to connect. Last year the teams did amazingly well with one finishing in 3rd place and receiving a display in recognition of the achievement. Please come and support the teams on the day! Although not a fundraising event we would be very grateful for any donations received and a huge benefit to the York branch.
