Who are we?
South West Herts Samaritans are a group of passionate volunteers working together to make sure fewer people die by suicide.
We help to keep the national helplines running, including phone and email, twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. We reach out to the local community, including schools, railway stations and hospitals, to improve people's emotional health. We train and support the team of Listening volunteers at HMP The Mount.
We opened our doors over 50 years ago in 1969 and we've been working hard ever since to be there for anyone - no matter who you are, no matter what life has thrown at you.
Volunteering with us
We rely on volunteers to run our service:
- Listening Volunteers who are available day and night to respond to our callers, and
- Support Volunteers who help with all aspects of running the branch
Queen's Award for Voluntary Service
In 2018, the South West Hertfordshire Samaritans won the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service. This is the MBE for volunteer groups, and is the highest award given to local volunteer groups. We're so proud of our volunteers for achieving this national level of recognition for all of their hard work.
