The Samaritans of Preston and District has officially opened its doors to a new, state-of-the-art facility.
The Samaritans of Preston and District has officially opened its doors to a new, state-of-the-art facility, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to providing emotional support to those in need. The ribbon-cutting ceremony, held today, was attended by local dignitaries and supporters, highlighting the importance of the charity's work in the Preston community.
The move to this modern facility aims to enhance the branch's capabilities in responding to the increasing demand for its services. In the UK and Ireland, Samaritans responds to a call for help every six seconds, totalling over 5 million calls annually. The Preston branch plays a crucial role in this nationwide effort, offering a listening ear to those experiencing emotional distress, struggling to cope, or at risk of suicide.
The Mayor of Preston, Councillor Phil Crowe, officially opened the branch by cutting the ribbon. Before cutting the ribbon, he addressed the crowd of volunteers, former volunteers, new neighbours and special guests, “I know what it’s like to lose someone to suicide and the impact it has. The work that the Samaritans do to help prevent suicide is fantastic. I’m delighted to declare this branch officially open.”
The new facility will enable the Preston Samaritans to expand its volunteer base and improve its outreach programs. This is particularly crucial given that Samaritans' research shows that men are three times more likely to die by suicide than women, and people from the most deprived areas are ten times more likely to die by suicide than those from the most affluent.
The move to this modern facility not only enhances the branch's operational capabilities but also significantly improves accessibility for volunteers and visitors alike. Located in an accessible area with good public transport links, the new branch makes it easier for people from all walks of life to volunteer their time. Additionally, the building features a larger, well-equipped training room. This space will be used to train new volunteers and can also be hired out to local businesses and charities, fostering community engagement and providing an additional revenue stream to support the branch's vital work.
Branch Director, Sarah Jackson, addressed the attendees, “Thank-you to everyone that has supported us over the years. Special thanks to The Trevor Hemmings Foundation whose recent grant allowed us to remodel our lovely new building to meet the needs of the branch. Trever Hemmings supported us for many years, and we know this charity was close to his heart.”
The opening of the new branch has garnered support from various local organisations, including Preston North End's charity arm, which recognizes the vital role Samaritans plays in supporting mental health in the community.
Tom Drake, Chief Executive Officer of Preston North End Community and Education Trust, cut a specially make cake for the occasion and commented, “It’s a privilege to be invited to this opening and see so many volunteers that have a similar continuous goal to us to build a stronger, safer and more resilient community.
Graeme Danton, Executive Director of Corporate Services from Samaritans highlighted the importance of the volunteers that give up their spare time for the charity, “Thanks to all amazing volunteers at Samaritans of Preston and District, without which the charity would not be able to reach so many people in their hour of need.”
Samaritans is open 24/7, 365 days a year, providing confidential emotional support to anyone in distress, struggling to cope, or at risk of suicide. The new facility will help ensure that this critical service continues to be available to those who need it most.
