Since 1970, Preston Samaritans have been helping those struggling to cope, by answering calls from those that need to talk, as well as through work in the local community.
About Us
Every life lost to suicide is a tragedy, and Samaritans’ vision is that fewer people die by suicide. We believe that suicide is preventable.
Samaritans is here for anyone struggling to cope – day or night, 365 days a year. We take action to prevent people reaching crisis point, helping people find ways to cope and learn the skills to be there for others. We campaign to make suicide prevention a priority.
Our volunteers
Typically, each year, our approx. 100 volunteers:
- donate 10,000 hours to run our charity – equivalent to around 6 full time staff – which helps ensure Samaritans remain open to callers 24 hours a day, every day of the year;
- respond to calls for help via phone and email from people who are experiencing emotional distress, despair, or suicidal feelings;
- raise awareness with the wider community through our work with other charities, businesses, prisons, colleges, the university, and other organisations.
It costs around £30,000 per year to keep our branch open. Everyone that works in the branch is a volunteer and we rely on donations to be able to provide a service that benefits people in Preston, and the surrounding areas, and across the United Kingdom.
