Oxford Samaritans volunteers spoke to the public at Oxford Railway Station
As part of a nationwide initiative, our volunteers approached people at Oxford Railway Station about what to do if they have spotted someone who they think might be struggling and needs help.
A little bit of small talk could save someone's life.
Here are the steps you can take:
- Trust your instincts. If something doesn't feel quite right, try to start a conversation with them.
- Try not to worry about saying the wrong thing. Whatever you say won't make it worse.
- Ask a question. Something like 'do you know where I can get a coffee?' could be all it takes to help interrupt someone's suicidal thoughts.
- Ask them if they're OK or if they need help.
- Encourage them to sit down somewhere safe and quiet.
- Ask them if there's someone you could call for them.
- Mention other sources of help, like Samaritans, their GP, or their friends and family.
