The 10th September each year is World Suicide Prevention Day. We're organising a bucket collection to help the branch raise funds to allow us to continue to address this serious issue.
***Article update - 25th October 2022***
On 8th October our branch co-Director, Gordon, attended a special vigil for World Suicide Prevention.
122 people marched in Salford to remember those that we have lost to suicide, one flag for every life lost. The Mayor of Salford Paul Dennett, together with Judd Skelton from Salford Intergrated Care Partnership, thanked Samaritans for the work we have been doing in Manchester & Salford for the last 60 years and for being there for callers when they are in crisis or feeling suicidal.

The 10th September each year is World Suicide Prevention Day. The initiative was launched in 2003 and aims to raise awareness and commitment to prevent suicides.
Every life lost to suicide is a tragedy, and Samaritans’ vision is that fewer people die by suicide. We believe that suicide is preventable.
An estimated one million people per year die by suicide, which is over 1% of all deaths. Tragically, this figure is rising.
Suicide affects every community and geography across the globe and some are at greater risk than others. On average, three male suicides are reported for every female one, consistently across different age groups and in almost every country in the world. More people die from suicide than from murder and war; it is the 13th leading cause of death worldwide.
It is therefore vitally important for Samaritans to continue to be able to offer support and help to any individual who might be suffering with suicidal thoughts. We rely on support, donations and grants in order to do so, and the Manchester and Salford branch continue to seek support from our local community and businesses , as well as from larger organisations too.
In the next few weeks we plan to organise a bucket collection at a Tesco store in the Manchester area. If you are a branch member and are interested in helping out, then please email Stacey at [email protected]
If you need help any time, then call 116 123. It's free, from any phone.
