Samaritans volunteer, Wendy Bateman will be cycling 350 miles from London to York in aid of Samaritans of Macclesfield & District in September 2021.
Wendy will be joined by branch director, Helen Beech on the stage from Cambridge to King’s Lynn and other volunteers are also very welcome to sign up for individual stages or even the whole ride.
In Wendy’s own words:
“I have been a Samaritan at the Macclesfield branch for almost 9 years and the director for Samaritan training for 2 years and I love being part of such a fantastic organisation. At Samaritans we receive over 10,000 calls for help every day and over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, demand for our help and support has gone through the roof.
"To meet this demand, we need to continue to expand and improve our services, so I’ve decided to put my money where my mouth is and signed up for the Samaritans Heritage Ride from London to York – a 6-day, 350-mile voyage of saddle soreness!
"I would massively appreciate it if you could sponsor me on this epic biking quest – it would definitely make all the toil totally worthwhile! Thank you!”

Helen says:
“I’ve had the privilege of being a listening volunteer at Macclesfield branch for about 8 years and am currently also director of our branch, which is a team of wonderful people. During the last year our services have been needed more than ever - in 2020, Samaritans volunteers spent over one million hours responding to calls for help.
"As volunteers we all give our time freely; we rely entirely on volunteers both to operate our help lines and also for the total running of our branch, so donations are essential to keep our service going. When the opportunity arose to do the flattest 54 mile section of the Samaritans Heritage cycle ride in aid of funds to support our 365 days a year, round the clock service, it seemed too good a chance to miss!
"Every £5 donated could help us respond to a call for help. Your support in helping us continue to be there for others is much appreciated.”
