Providing emotional support in Lewisham, Greenwich and Southwark for 50 years
We've come a long way since 1969
We've trained over 1,300 Samaritans and responded to around 30,000 calls for help a year.
We've worked in partnership with some great organisations and agencies to promote good mental health throughout our communities. We're currently working with:
- Oxleas and South London and Maudsley NHS Trusts
- Belmarsh, ISIS and Thameside prisons
- local schools and universities
- Network Rail
- homeless drop-in centres like the 999 Club.
We've also moved three times in the last 30 years to our current location on the edge of Fordham Park, New Cross:
Now we'd like your support to do even more!
We asking for your support in our 50th year to help us continue to be there to provide emotional support and to reach out to people across Lewisham, Greenwich and Southwark.
We want to:
- increase our outreach work with people who are vulnerable, homeless and have complex needs
- talk more about good mental health and wellbeing
- reach out to more children and young people through schools and youth groups.

Support for Lewisham, Greenwich and Southwark Samaritans
"I am pleased to offer my support to the Samaritans and join them in celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. The Samaritans carry out incredible work across the country, providing emotional support to thousands of people each year who are struggling and feel they have no one else to turn to. I am particularly impressed by the work that Lewisham, Greenwich and Southwark Samaritans do in the community, working in partnership with local organisations such as St Mungo’s and the 999 Club as well as NHS partners in South East London. The role they play in helping people in Lewisham get the support they need is vital and undoubtedly saves lives."
Vicky Foxcroft MP for Lewisham Deptford
“We all have mental health and anyone can experience mental health problems at any time in their life. I am hugely grateful to Lewisham, Greenwich and Southwark Samaritans for the support they have provided to those who need them over the last fifty years. Lewisham has a proud tradition of working alongside its diverse voluntary sector to help transform the lives of residents. We call it the ‘Lewisham Way’ and our Samaritans branch is very much part of it. The Council is pleased to provide workspace for volunteers at peppercorn rent, so they can continue their vital work.”
