Samaritans volunteers are ordinary people. We come from all walks of life and all backgrounds and cultures, but we have one thing in common: we are all very good listeners.
Listening Volunteers
To ensure that we are able to continue to offer support to those in need we are looking for listening volunteers who can spare a few hours each week. You don’t need any formal qualifications, just a natural ability to listen non-judgementally and offer emotional support. All volunteers receive special training in listening skills with eight 3 hours modules over several weeks and are then paired with a mentor for their initial shifts.
Support Volunteers
We are also looking for support volunteers who play an integral part in keeping our branch running. Support volunteers help out in roles such as Treasurer and Chairman of the committee. In addition to this, they help to keep our IT in order, helping with the branch administration, publicity and branch housekeeping.
I felt instantly at ease and comfortable with my fellow volunteers which encouraged me to jump straight in with my support role and help in any way I could! If you are worried about not having enough time for the listening training do not overlook joining the team as a support volunteer, you won't regret it.
- Jenna has been apart of the branch since May 2024
