In a vibrant display of community spirit and athletic determination, the Horsham and Crawley Samaritans joined forces at the recent Swimarathon organised by Horsham Lions.
A day of dedication and teamwork
The Swimatathon, designed to celebrate community involvement and raise awareness of the work of local charities, was turned into a showcase of sheer determination by Team Samaritans. Participants from both Horsham and Crawley dove into the challenge with gusto. Among the day’s standout achievements, Team Samaritans completed an astounding 106 lengths of the pool, a feat that symbolised not only physical stamina but also a dedication to supporting those in need.

The power of community and support
Horsham Lions, the group behind the event, created a welcoming atmosphere that encouraged people from all walks of life to participate in an activity that balances both fitness and charity. Each year a local charity is chosen by the committee as the main beneficiary of the event, and this year half of all money raised goes to the Phoenix Stroke Club, based in Horsham, for people who have suffered a stroke or other neurological disorder. the remaining half of the money raised is retained by the participating organisation.
Chris Holland, Branch Director of Horsham and Crawley Samaritans beamed with pride
Seeing our local Samaritans push themselves to complete 106 pool lengths highlights the remarkable unity between physical well-being and emotional support. It’s moments like these that remind us how strong our community truly is. Our volunteers give up the valuable resource of their spare time for our callers and also to represent our branch at events like this, whilst raising the much needed money to cover the costs of running our branch.

By combining exercise and fun, the event inspired locals to think more holistically about health. The accomplishment of Team Samaritans has sparked conversations amongst residents about the potential of integrating fitness challenges with supportive emotional health services.
