Horsham and Crawley Samaritans took calls for a solid 24 hours on World Mental Health Day.
Listening Volunteers took calls for an extra hour at the start or end of their normal shifts, meaning that the branch remained open, answering calls from all over the UK and Ireland.
Normally the branch closes between some shifts, during which time other branches pick up calls, but thanks to the commitment of the volunteer listeners, there were no gaps to service on 10th October 2024.
Chris Holland, Branch Director of Horsham and Crawley Samaritans said, “Samaritans are available 24 hours a day, so that we can be there when our callers need us. It made sense to keep our branch open round the clock to mark our support for World Mental Health Day.”
Samaritans are available to listen by calling the free number ☎️116 123 from any phone.
Sometimes it’s tough getting out of bed at 0300 to start a shift at 0400 like I did today, but being able to help someone needing some support makes it all worthwhile
