Outreach volunteers attended local college freshers' events to spread the important message of the Samaritans and how we can help the younger community.
Last week outreach volunteers attended freshers' events at Crawley, Haywards Heath and Brinsbury colleges. They spoke to young people who might have not heard about the Samaritans and what we do, taking the time to explain more detail about our service.
There was a lot of interest from the students and staff alike, and it’s always surprising how many don’t know we’re there to listen. We came with crochet hearts, worry worms and brown paper ‘goodie bags’ which were a popular draw to the table. We provided a gentle reminder that we are there to listen when those worries become overwhelming.
It is important for us to get out into the community and visit all ages. For young people college can be a very overwhelming period of change and making our presence known is important to us and for them.
We are grateful to the colleges for giving us a stall at the events and we wish our best of luck and support to all the students starting this new chapter in their life, take it one day at a time and you can only ever do your best!
