For this month's 'Spotlight on a Volunteer' of Great Yarmouth Samaritans we say hello to Chris
We sat down with Chris, one of our fantastic listeners, to find out more about his experiences of being a volunteer, why he became a Samaritan, and his interests outside of the Samaritans.
How long have you been a Samaritan?
I’ve been a Samaritan for about 18 months as a listening volunteer and, more recently, a shift leader. I am also mentoring a new recruit to help with their training.
Why did you become a Samaritan?
It’s quite a tricky question to answer in a sentence and is really for a number of reasons. Some are very personal and some are through sharing other people’s situations and difficult stories, and wanting to be there to listen and support somebody in the times when it is most needed. To do something that can have a direct impact for callers in need of a friendly ear is really rewarding and humbling. Being with the Samaritans is a privilege that I am proud to be a small part of.

Tell us about your life outside the Samaritans, what do you like to do?
I have a young son so lots of my time outside work is family orientated. I also like playing football (admittedly, I am way too old and unfit for that really!) and following Norwich City. I enjoy going to music and comedy gigs and spending time socially with friends and family.
What is your ‘happy place’? It can be a place, view, activity, or anything that makes you happy.
I think my happy place depends on the mood I am in at any one time. And the people you are with can make anywhere a happy place… but a decent pub with good friends usually does the trick! But, away from any of that, I would always happily be out for a walk, or at home, with my wife and son as an ever-favourite place to be.
