Water makes up 60% of our bodies and 90% of our brains, so it is no surprise of its importance.
We need water to help maintain our physical wellbeing: hydrate our skin, digest food and enable our kidneys to flush out waste - our body needs water!
Drinking more water leads to improvements in our working and short-term memory, and has been found to reduce headaches - our brain needs water!
How do you judge when and how much to drink?
Firstly, you shouldn't wait until you feel thirsty. If you notice you are thirsty, you are probably already slightly dehydrated. European guidelines suggest drinking around 2 litres of water a day for men and 1.6 litres for women.
Drinking a glass a water with each meal will help you to meet your target. Think about carrying a water bottle with you - this will encourage you to drink more.
Water is great: it contains no calories and is available pretty much everywhere.
