Great Yarmouth Samaritans look at ten simple things you can do to improve your wellbeing.
We all want quick and easy ideas to improve our health and wellbeing. Great Yarmouth Samaritans pick ten 'simple things' that can easily fit into our daily routine.
Third in our series of 'simple things' you can try: Sing
Research shows singing is a great way to boost mood, reduce anxiety and even relieve pain. Also, and most importantly, it is incredibly fun.
Singing gives us a natural 'high' by boosting our endocannabinoids - these are chemicals produced naturally in our body and in high concentration they can improve our mood.
Singing plays a part in group bonding, communication, healing rituals and collective expressions of emotion; it has intrinsic benefit for humans
Dr Daisy Fancourt, Associate Professor of Psychobiology at University College London
Dr Fancourt goes on to suggest the benefits come from the different components: there is a pleasure of being immersed in music, the process of breathing, plus it is often a social activity. Her team at University College London also found that a single session of singing can lead to improvements in mood and reductions in stress.
So why not give singing a try? Put some music on and sing like no one is listening, go to a gig and sing with the crowd, or maybe even join a choir.
