Gloucester Samaritans have a good relationship with Gloucester Station. Our van and banners are often there and we have signage at the station to remind people of our service.
SMALL TALK SAVES LIVES
On 2 August this year, Samaritans launched the ‘Small Talks Saves Lives’ campaign, in partnership with Network Rail, British Transport Police and the wider rail industry, to empower the public to act to prevent suicide on the railways and other settings.
Suicide is preventable and suicidal thoughts are often temporary and can be interrupted. The campaign reminds each of us that we already have the skills to start a conversation with someone who needs help and we should feel confident to act.
By trusting our instincts, if something doesn’t feel right, a little small talk and a simple question, such as “Hello, what’s the time?” or “how great is this weather?” can be all it takes to interrupt someone’s suicidal thoughts and help start them on the journey to recovery. It could save a life.
It’s more important now than ever that we look out for each other. The challenges that people face up and down the country have been felt even more deeply as the pandemic has had a profound impact on the nation’s mental health and continues to be a concern for many people.
To find out more go to www.samaritans.org/smalltalksaveslives where you can read about real people who shared their stories and experience with Samaritans, demonstrating the positive impact a little small talk can have on somebody's life.
There is also information about how to start a conversation with someone who needs help.
