Welcome to Gloucester & District Samaritans Branch Website
We are a warm and friendly group of well-trained volunteers who are committed to providing excellent support to people in distress, as well as care and appreciation for our fellow volunteers. We are united by a strong belief in the relief from despair that can be found from sharing difficult feelings in the safe and private space provided by Samaritans.
In August 2021 we celebrated 50 years of offering our listening support to the Gloucester and surrounding communities, which include the Forest of Dean and Stroud districts. We are based in a specially adapted terraced house at 9 Parkend Road, opposite Gloucester skate park, with a private car park for duty volunteers at the back.
We have around 140 volunteers, from a wide age range, offering our listening support service via telephone; additionally there are opportunities for Support Volunteers to assist with different aspects of helping the branch.
We are affiliated to the national Samaritans charity and, as a local Branch, we are dependent on the kind donations of others to remain open. Our volunteers are very active in our communities – attending events, providing key message talks, having input following a distressing local event, supporting veterans groups, NHS and other frontline staff. We have also developed good links with our local university, colleges and schools, as well as our voluntary & community groups.
