Thank you to Daniel Blank for profiling a few of our Samaritans of Farnborough & District Volunteers on InYourArea, Farnborough News, Aldershot News and News & Mail!
Name: Sue Collett
Organisation: Farnborough & District Samaritans
Town/village: Frimley, Surrey
Fun fact about yourself: Wish I could be interesting maybe: my parents disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle
When and why did you start volunteering for Samaritans of Farnborough & District?
I was due to retire and had long wanted to get involved with Samaritans and the local community but it had not been possible because of work commitments. I started my training in January 2010 and here I am 10 years later – can’t believe how the time has flown.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a Samaritans of Farnborough & District volunteer?
I started as a listening volunteer and my interest grew as I undertook a variety of roles within the branch: minutes secretary on the committee – as a trustee – then became involved in outreach which is very close to my heart. I was responsible for setting up the Samaritans Service in Frimley Park Hospital Emergency Department on Monday evenings.
We started in April 2013 and are still going strong. It has been my pleasure to be able to spread the word in the community about the work of Samaritans – at meetings, on committees, in schools and working with local organisations where all of us are working towards a central aim – to make a difference.
Why should others in the community volunteer for organisations like Samaritans of Farnborough & District?
To become part of the community you live in and join a warm and supportive environment. Receive brilliant training where you will learn much about yourself and others. You will really make a difference to be there for our callers and there are other ways you can support too. I would certainly recommend it.
If you are going through a tough time and need to talk to someone, Samaritans volunteers are available 24/7, 365 days a year. Call free on 116 123 or email [email protected].
