Thank you to Daniel Blank for profiling a few of our Samaritans of Farnborough & District Volunteers on InYourArea, Farnborough News, Aldershot News and News & Mail!
Our volunteer Judy started making marmalade to raise money for a project in Ecuador. On her return from La Ciudad Feliz (The Happy City) she started selling it to support our branch!
Name: Judy Divall
Organisation: Samaritans of Farnborough & District
Town/village: Yateley, Hampshire
Occupation: Retired nurse/counsellor
Fun fact about yourself: I’m involved with a project in Ecuador and love playing the djembe drum with Good News Drummers.
When and why did you start volunteering for Samaritans of Farnborough & District?
First time was back in the 1980s; second 2012. Having experienced being ‘truly heard’ when I needed an understanding ear myself, plus realising how little we’re taught how to listen to each other, I wanted to offer that to those who maybe felt the same. Sadly, many don’t have someone to turn to with the ‘heavies’ of their lives.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a Samaritans of Farnborough & District volunteer?
Hearing a desperate caller’s voice lift by the end of a conversation or the “thank you, it’s really helped to talk, knowing it’s confidential and receiving no judgement, criticism or advice”.
Importantly, too, the support we get and give to each other at the Farnborough branch.
Why should others in the community volunteer for organisations like Samaritans of Farnborough & District?
Because it’s so fulfilling; helping another helps ourselves.
If you are going through a tough time and need to talk to someone, Samaritans volunteers are available 24/7, 365 days a year. Call free on 116 123 or email[email protected].
