Samaritans joins the NSPA at Derby County Football Club for World Suicide Prevention Day
The Samaritans of Derby and District will join mental health organisations and communities including Derbyshire Healthcare and Derby County Community Trust under the National Suicide Prevention Alliance (NSPA) at Derby County Pride Park Stadium on the 13th September, to raise awareness of suicide prevention.
In 2017, over 6,000 people died by suicide in the UK and Republic of Ireland. In the UK, men are three times more likely to take their own lives than women, in the Republic of Ireland men are four times more likely. In the UK, the highest rate was for men aged 45-49 years old. In Ireland the highest suicide rate was for men aged between 25-34 and 45-54 years of age.
Every life lost to suicide is a tragedy and we know that suicide is preventable not inevitable, but not being okay is still widely stigmatised. Governments can still make better, more ambitious plans to prevent suicide.
Every year organisations and communities around the world come together to raise awareness of how we can create a world where fewer people die by suicide.
Derby Samaritans, as part of the NSPA, will be at Pride Park Stadium for Derby County’s home match against Cardiff City on Friday 13th September. Volunteers will be stationed around the stadium before match kick-off at 7.45pm to provide information leaflets and talking to match-goers about improving wellbeing and mental health. There will also be Samaritan listening volunteers and a confidential room facility on hand, should any members of the public need to talk about any worries that have been affecting them.
‘Whatever you're going through, a Samaritan will face it with you. We're here 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Call 116 123 for free.’
