The Earlsdon Festival is Coventry’s biggest street gathering and takes place annually on May Day bank holiday.
The family friendly event this year attracted about 20,000 visitors who were able to enjoy some glorious weather and visit over 60 market stalls and street food vendors as well as all the local shops and food and drink establishments that were open on the day.
There was no shortage of entertainment too with a range of musicians, dancers, theatre groups, exercise classes and local sports clubs.
We had our own Samaritans stall and our volunteers were able to raise awareness of what we do, give out literature and receive donations. We also provided games to keep the children entertained and rewarded them with sweets and balloons.
Our shop staff were there too and had loads of bargains available on their stall as well as being able to direct people to our Samaritans store just down the road in Moor Street.
It’s always a great day and we feel that it is important that we take part as it provides an opportunity for us to spread awareness of our work as well as raise funds. The fact that we play such an active part in the local community is one of the reasons we achieved the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.
