All our services are provided by unpaid volunteers but it costs us £200 to cover the cost for every new volunteer to build the skills they need to answer a call for help.
How You Can Help
Donate to Chesterfield Samaritans
The simplest way for you to help us is by making a donation through our Donation site. If you would like to donate please click the link below.
Volunteer to fundraise – hold a fundraising challenge
This is a great way for you and your friends to raise a lot of money in support of a very good cause. Not long ago three of our supporters, who share a passion for Yoga, challenged themselves to complete 300 Sun Salutations each. They wanted to help others less fortunate than themselves during the difficult time around Christmas. They attracted a lot of donors, raising over £1,200 for the branch. It shows what can be done!

Closure Of Our Charity Shop
Unfortunately, the decision has been taken to close the Chesterfield Samaritans charity shop on 5, West Bars. Our last day open to customers will be on Saturday 8 March 2025.
Our Treasurer, Dave Maddox, says
"Like many retailers, we have faced the challenges of rising costs and lower town centre footfall. Our charity shop has helped fund our service for many years but sadly, it is no longer viable for us to continue trading. While this is an extremely difficult decision to have taken, it is important to protect the charity's finances so that Chesterfield Samaritans can be here to support our callers for many years to come."
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all customers and volunteers who have supported our charity shop over the years. The generosity of local people helps us deliver our vital work at Chesterfield Samaritans, and every year we support around 4000 people by telephone, email, webchat and at local community events. We remain dedicated to delivering our vital work, and ensuring fewer people die by suicide.
After our charity shop closes, we will focus our efforts on other fundraising activities, and we will warmly welcome support from local individuals, organisations and businesses who care deeply about our work in the suicide prevention field. We are also committed to furthering our outreach programme, which will see Chesterfield Samaritans increase its presence in the local community, providing support and awareness of our services to those who need it most.
Co-op Community Funding Grant
Here we see our Treasurer and Outreach Lead looking delighted, having received a very generous contribution from the Co-op Community Fund. They were attending a Celebration Event organised by the Co-op.
The Co-op recognise the important work done by Samaritans and have adopted Samaritans as a national charity partner. They will help to support the charity and work to raise awareness of the key service we provide.

Sarah Millican Tin Shake
Our intrepid tin-shakers were outside the City Hall, Sheffield to collect for the branch following the recent Sarah Millican show. Sarah Millican is a strong supporter of Samaritans and allows local branches to collect following her shows. (Sheffield and Rotherham branches were also able to collect on other nights). Her audiences recognise the importance of Samaritans and give generously.

Julie’s Marathon Walk
One of our listening volunteers, Julie Barber, has completed a 27 mile sponsored walk with her family and friends and has raised over £2,000 for our branch. The walk started and finished at Carsington Visitor Centre where we held an information stall to raise awareness and take donations.
Julie’s been a volunteer at Chesterfield for three years and enjoys the supportive and sociable environment as well as the branch’s commitment to its important work. Thank you, Julie, for your heroic achievement and your great fundraising!
Further donations can be made at Julie’s online fundraising page, here
