Three of our Samaritans, Alex, Paula and Mark, visited RAF Coningsby to train 16 mental health first aiders.
The training covered active listening that gave attendees a set of tools they could use when supporting people going through a tough time.
We also looked into the barriers to listening, this was very informative and received a lot of feedback from the workshop attendees.
The role-plays based on the skills learnt regarding the listening wheel and explanations on how the Samaritans support people encouraged a reflection on how the Samaritans service and skills could translate across to their roles as Mental Health First Aiders.
The feedback we received on the training was as follows:
I really enjoyed today's session and feel that it will be valuable in my workplace.
Fantastic training session. Brilliantly presented.
Thank you, I found it very interesting and educational.
The listening wheel will definitely be a key tool that I will use.
We are pleased with this feedback, especially that the attendees found the training helpful.
After the Workshop and to say thank you to Samaritans of Boston, Lincolnshire for speaking at RAF Conninsby's Mental Health Symposium back in November and delivering the Work Place Training to their Mental Health Aiders. Sqn Ldr Simon Devenish arranged for Paula, Alex and Mark to have lunch in the Officers Mess, Have a tour of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and to see a Typhoon Jet up close.
A great day was had by the course attendees and the 3 Samaritans who, volunteered their time, to deliver the training to help the branch and Samaritans as an organisation raise awareness of how to support people going through a difficult time in their lives.
