Cavehill Community Choir and Belfast Ukulele Jam Sing For Samaritans in North Belfast
A large and enthusiastic audience gathered in the Girdwood Hub in North Belfast on a lovely summer's evening. In a packed programme, Cavehill Community Choir
As part of wider efforts to get people across the UK & Ireland to join in to 'Sing for Samaritans' the Girdwood Hub in North Belfast was the place to be on 8th June 2018. Starting at 7:30pm, the concert featured music in a wide variety of styles from pop & rock to folk & spirituals, something to suit all tastes and introduce many to something new.
An audience from far and wide including visitors from elsewhere in Europe and South Africa as well as from Belfast and beyond came to enjoy the show.
There was music from such diverse sources as popular choral classics, an ancient Irish lament, XTC and of course a bit of audience participation.
Also entertaining the enthusiastic crowd were Belfast Ukulele Jam. a important common theme here is that both the Community Choir and the Ukulele Jam are collectives of amateur musicians who come together for the sheer love of making music together and who want to share the life-affirming joy that comes from making music with others.
As the ukulele action gathered pace, non-participation was not an option and there was much to get the toes tapping and the hands clapping including a rousing rendition of Brown Eyed Girl - this was after all a Belfast crowd.
There was more to come as the Choir returned including another musical workout for the audience navigation the intricacies of a multi-part round then it was on to the wonderfully appropriate Bridge Over Troubled Waters providing a rousing finalé to a wonderful evening's entertainment. A retiring collection at the end of the night raised much needed funds to support the work of Belfast Samaritans and a great buzz was evident on the way out as the audience began to wend their way homewards.
