Our branch has a dedicated programme of Outreach into schools and colleges in the Greater Belfast area...
Challenges and Opportunity
Young people encounter many challenges as the grow and develop. Sadly, for some, this can include an increased risk of suicide and self-harm. However, at the same time their skills of communication and awareness of the help that is available to them at difficult times may not have developed to keep pace with these challenges. For many years our branch has been working in Schools, Colleges and Training Centres to reach into the lives of young people and make a difference as they face growing up in a complex world.
"Its OK to Not Be OK"
In our awareness sessions we work with groups of young people to help develop their ideas about what makes a difference when facing hard times and pressures. These interactive discussions help to develop ideas about what contributes to emotional resilience in a complicated world, especially the importance of listening and talking as a means of connecting with others. This is developed from the perspective not only of the young person themselves but also emphasises how important the simple act of listening can be if a friend is experiencing hard times. Importantly, these group discussions help to underpin the idea that seeking appropriate help when its needed is a sign of strength. As part of this sessions increase awareness of the range of help and support available to those who need it when times get particularly difficult.
