We are always looking for new volunteers from any walk of life.
We are primarily a listening service so most of our 'listening' volunteers are involved with that but we do have other roles in our branch that are covered by an amazing bunch of support volunteers, this includes fund raising, publicity, administration - so if you wanted to volunteer but feel that maybe listening is not for you, we have lots of other opportunities!
As a 'listening' volunteer you will be asked to do a 3 hour shift with another volunteer once a week, then once every five weeks do a 3/4 hour night shift. During a shift you will be answering the phones and giving emotional support to distressed and suicidal callers. Before you start answering the phones you will receive Samaritan's Core training via face to face and Zoom in a group of new volunteers and two Trainers over a period of a seven weeks, and then you will be eased in to answering calls, first listening in on calls taken by experienced volunteers, and then taking calls yourself while being supported by an experienced volunteer. There are always at least 2 volunteers on a shift so you would never be alone answering calls.
So if you would like to volunteer at our branch, either as a 'listening' volunteer or a 'support' volunteer then please follow this link Becoming a volunteer where you can apply online.
Once you have completed an online application form you will be invited to attend an online interview and if successful we will take you forward onto our training program as explained above.
We look forward to hearing from you.
