In Volunteer Spotlight, we celebrate Bob, an extraordinary volunteer here at Ashford
This spotlight is on Bob, who has volunteered at Samaritans since 1979 - 46 years ago!
When Bob began his journey with Samaritans, the service looked very different than it does today. Callers were primarily from the local area, and night duties involved 10-hour shifts with phones connected directly to volunteers' bedrooms. In the early 1980s, Bob was part of a dedicated team of 80 volunteers who ensured 24/7 coverage, 365 days a year in Ashford.
Bob has held numerous leadership positions throughout his remarkable tenure, including Branch Director and Deputy Director. His commitment to supporting others extends beyond his local branch – he has spent 12 years in regional and national roles, including serving as Regional Treasurer. As a branch visitor for 10 years, Bob visited 20 branches throughout the UK and Ireland, and his passion for Samaritans even led him to visit branches in Hong Kong and New Zealand!
One of Bob's most challenging moments came in 1987 when, as Branch Director, he led the response during the great storm. With many volunteers unable to reach the branch due to blocked roads, Bob coordinated local volunteers to work extra shifts to maintain our service.
When he began to develop hearing problems over a decade ago, Bob adapted his role to focus on email support. To this day, he maintains his weekly shifts, providing crucial emotional support.
Bob's legacy at Ashford Samaritans extends beyond his various official roles – he has mentored numerous Branch Directors over the years, including the current director, helping to shape the future of Samaritans in his community. His dedication to supporting others through direct listening services, leadership, or mentoring exemplifies the very best of Samaritans' values.
Thank you, Bob! ❤️
