East Coast Samaritans were delighted to attend the Dominican College again for a school talk with 3rd year students.
On World Mental Health Day, Tue, Oct 10, 2023 East Coast Samaritan volunteers had the pleasure of visiting the Dominican College, Wicklow to have a chat with 3rd year pupils about reaching out for support, by talking about anything that may be troubling them.
We discussed Samaritans are available every day and every night by phone and by email. We offered the students pens and wristbands to reinforce the message to call 116 123 or email [email protected] if they would like to reach out for emotional support.
We emphasized the importance in getting help with mental health difficulties and what Samaritans can do to offer support to those struggling with various difficulties and mental health issues.
One of the volunteers new to school talks on the Outreach team showed great interest in partaking in community talks. The volunteer said, "I felt quite scared at first for the thoughts of actually getting up and speaking in front of so many teenagers," but after the students came in and took their seats I felt ok, the volunteer added "We need to show the kids that Samaritans are here to help, to let them know that help is out there and that they are not alone. I felt by the end of the talk we spread the message that support is available and if this helps the students we are helping them by raising awareness that they are not alone." The volunteer added, "This was a very good experience"
