Update about Pilgrim's Food Masters swim for East Coast Samaritans
It was the brainchild of Terry Byrne and the production team at Pilgrim Food Masters initially that led to the annual Winter swim which has taken place on the 1st Sunday in December for the last 5 years, to date they have raised in excess of €35,000 for numerous charities, this year the chosen charity was East Coast Samaritans.
And so it was that we ended up in Brittas Bay on a cold Sunday morning, it was a beautiful day with brilliant sunshine, but it was cold. Due to the pandemic the swim had to be virtual and took place all down the East Coast, first into the water was Richard Irvine the commercial director of Pilgrim Food Masters, he took a dip in Blackrock before 9.00am.
Terry was on hand in Brittas to direct operations, in all 15 swimmers went in for a dip here including regulars Brian Walsh, John O Byrne, Seanie Furlong, Victor Lacey and Anto Mc Garry. Joe Byrne who was in charge of this year’s event said a few words of encouragement before people plunged into the sea, they were joined by a number of the East Coast Samaritan volunteers.
Special mention must also be made of Lorraine Hayden who led a group of hardy swimmers further down the coast. Fundraising is continuing with a workplace raffle taking place before Christmas.

We would like to thank you all so much for your support and for creating awareness of East Coast Samaritans
The Winter Swim in Brittas is a good image for the Samaritan caller, everything appears bright & sunny on the outside but inside everything is cold and black, in 2021 ECS had 10,200 contacts for people in need of support and since we began in 2014 we have had in the region of 70,000 contacts. Events like the Winter swim alerts the public that we are there for them.
