Thank you for lighting up on Ireland's Longest Night
A staggering 140 heritage sites, public buildings and companies joined a national campaign to raise awareness of Samaritans in Ireland this Christmas.
Samaritans Ireland marks the Longest Night of the year on the Winter Solstice to remind those struggling to cope that its helpline is open during their darkest hours this Christmas.
Volunteers answered almost 35,000 calls to Samaritans 24-hour freephone number (116 123) last December, including 1,120 on Christmas Day alone.
Dozens of sites supported the campaign including the Department of Health, The Rock of Cashel, Bunratty Castle, Slane Castle, Kilkenny Castle, Cork City Hall, several universities, and county council offices across the county.
East Coast Samaritans would like to thank Arklow and Wicklow Municipal Council for their support by raising awareness by lighting the bandstand, Arklow, The Nineteen Arches bridge, Arklow and the Billy Byrne Monument, Wicklow Town. We also would like to thank Siobhan from St Mary and Peter's Church for having the belfry lit green to mark this special occasion.
Independent Councillor for Arklow Municipal District Peir Leonard said " Even in the darkest hours and the darkest place there is always hope, it's just sometimes we all need a little help to find it, that's where just one phone call and conversation can make a difference. I would urge people not to carry their worries on their own and make that call. Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers in our community who are keeping the light of hope alive".
