The Gerard Murphy Memorial Car Show and Road Run, an annual event that honors the memory of Gerard Murphy who died tragically on January 3rd, 2011, raised 3,500 euro for Samaritans on 1st of October
East Coast Samaritans would like to express our heartfelt thanks for your generous donation of 3,500 euro from the Gerard Murphy Memorial Road Run and Car Show. Your contribution will help us to be here for anyone in need of emotional support.
The event, which is organized by Gerard’s parents Pat and Brid Murphy and family, also donated funds to three organizations that provide support and assistance to people in need.
Wexford Marine Watch, Wexford Marine Watch is a Voluntary Organisation that provides Suicide Prevention Patrols along Wexford Quays, Harbour & the Bridge.
Slaney Search and Rescue, Slaney Search and Rescue is a voluntary organisation based in Enniscorthy. Their aim is to search for, rescue or recover missing persons in County Wexford.
Good and New Donegal, Good and New, Donegal provides free transport from Donegal to Galway to people affected by Cancer.
The event, which has been running for 11 years (it should be 13 years but it was suspended due to Covid), attracted hundreds of classic car enthusiasts from all over Ireland and the UK. There was a car show at the Mart, Enniscorthy, all of the cars were on display. The participants enjoyed a scenic road run through the countryside. The road run was well supported, crowds gathered to admire all of the well kept classic cars all along the route, The weather was sunny and warm, creating a festive atmosphere for the visitors and the exhibitors.
Gerard’s father, Pat, said he was overwhelmed by the turnout and the generosity of the people. Gerard’s car, a beautiful candy applered Nissan 200 SX, was on display for people to admire before leading the road run, to see so many people cheer and clap when Gerard’s car drove out brought a tear to my eye,” Pat said. “It was a great atmosphere, so nice to see people talking and mixing. I go to shows all over the country, I found this show to have a great atmosphere and an enjoyable time.”
The car was one of Gerard’s passions, and he spent a lot of time and effort to maintain and improve it. His parents said they wanted to share his love for cars with others, and to raise awareness that support is available for anyone going through a difficult time.
The event also featured live music and entertainment from local artists, who volunteered their time and talent to support the cause. Mary Byrne, winner of the voice, sang some songs and Stacey Breen sang some country music on stage at the event, as did Pat Hayes. Richie Kavanagh, a popular Irish singer and comedian, came to the event. Richie made a video with one of the prizes in one of his songs previously. He also helped with the raffle which raised additional funds for the charities.
The organizers Pat and Brid, expressed their gratitude to all the sponsors, donors, volunteers, and participants who made the event possible and successful. They also paid tribute to Eamonn Mc Devitt founder of the Good and New Cancer Bus who sadly lost his life due to illness shortly after the event. “May he rest in peace,”
The Gerard Murphy Memorial Car Show and Road Run will continue next year on October 6th 2024, with more hard work and preparations underway. The event is a testament to the legacy of Gerard Murphy, who lives on in the hearts and minds of his family and friends.
