East Coast Samaritans recently visited Gorey Community School on 9th of October 2024 to deliver an insightful and engaging talk to students about the importance of reaching out for support if needed.
Gorey Community School, located in the heart of Gorey, County Wexford, Ireland, is renowned for its commitment to academic excellence and holistic education. Gorey Community School is the largest school in Ireland, and (as of 2018) had over 1500 students enrolled. Established with the vision of fostering a nurturing and inclusive environment, the school has become a cornerstone of the local community. Staff and students welcomed the volunteers who shared valuable insights on mental health and support systems. The session focused on several key areas.
Importance of Reaching Out for support. Volunteers emphasized the significance of seeking help when facing challenges. They discussed various reasons why someone might need the support of the Samaritans, highlighting that everyone can benefit from a listening ear at times.
Exploring Moods and Coping Mechanisms was also discussed. The discussion included an exploration of different moods and coping mechanisms. Students and volunteers talked about effective strategies such as exercise, gaming, music, and other activities that can help manage stress and improve mental well-being.
Active Listening and Communication. A major part of the session was dedicated to the importance of feeling listened to and the art of listening to others. Volunteers introduced the concept of the “listening wheel,” which includes techniques like open questions, clarifying, encouragement, reflection, and reacting. This segment allowed students to understand the value of active listening.
Identifying Signs of Distress was highlighted by volunteers. The session also covered how to recognize signs that someone might be struggling. Students shared examples and discussed ways to offer support to peers who may be feeling down.
East Coast Samaritans visit to Gorey Community School was a valuable opportunity for students to learn about mental health, the importance of communication, and the resources available to them. The students left with a deeper understanding of how to care for themselves and others.
