Arklow Library Presents "The Elephant in the Room" in Support of Samaritans, Endorsed by Charlie Bird and Brent Pope.
Arklow, Ireland – 16th October 2023
East Coast Samaritans are thrilled to announce the arrival of "The Elephant in the Room," to Arklow Library. This unique initiative aims to raise awareness about mental health and encourage open conversations around the topic. The elephant itself is the only one in the collection which has been signed by both Charlie Bird and President Michael D. Higgins. The Elephant in the Room campaign is supported by a number of well known ambassadors and Mental Health Advocates here in Ireland including U2’s Adam Clayton, Comedian PJ. Gallagher, Rugby Player Caelan Doris and Veteran Journalist and Broadcaster Charlie Bird.
"The Elephant in the Room" series is a powerful visual representation of the challenges faced by individuals dealing with mental health issues. The centerpiece of the exhibition is a life-sized elephant sculpture, symbolizing the metaphorical "elephant in the room" that often represents unspoken mental health struggles. The sculpture serves as a reminder that it is essential to address these issues openly and without judgment. This particular elephant which is called ‘Ellie’, is a collaboration between Charlie Bird and well known artist Niall O’Loughlin and is a tribute to the work of the Samaritans, Vicky Phelan and Charlie’s dog Tiger.
Charlie Bird, a respected figure in Irish journalism, has long been an advocate for mental health awareness. He believes that initiatives like "The Elephant in the Room" play a crucial role in breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health. Bird states, "It's time to acknowledge the elephant in the room and start talking openly about mental health. By doing so, we can create a supportive environment where individuals feel comfortable reaching out for help."
Brent Pope, a well-known rugby analyst and mental health advocate, also supports the exhibition's mission. Pope emphasizes the importance of community support and understanding, as he said, "Mental health affects us all, directly or indirectly. It's vital that we come together as a community to support those who may be struggling and let them know that they are not alone."
The Samaritans provide invaluable support to individuals in distress, offering a listening ear and a safe space to talk. By raising awareness and funds for the Samaritans, "The Elephant in the Room" aims to contribute to their vital work and ensure that help is readily available for those who need it.
The elephant will be open for the public to view during Arklow Library's regular operating hours and can be visited on the second floor of the library until 2nd November. Ellie will be greeted by the Lord Mayor of Dublin at the Mansion House on the 4th of November 2023.
